Previously titled: Narrated Match Keenan Cornelius Gi
Okay, so I want to narrate a couple of matches for you And I think this is one of the one of the best matches to narrate because it was a very good match It's against Keenan Cornelius who's a multiple-time world champion This was us at brown belt just before I went black belt and himself So I'm going to go ahead and click play in three two one and it starts off a little bit late I'm already halfway through trying to pass him with a nice half guard pass I've got a very good under hook here and actually a really good position that I really shouldn't have wasted because All I had to do is push his bottom knee down and slide past which I do right now But instead I quickly opt to jump over the top Which is probably a little bit fancy and he was able to get his knee back in and recover guard It was a very good opportunity to pass which I should have capitalized on if I knew what I knew now But it's okay. So Keenan's got a very good guard. He plays a lot of spider guard You can see he's trying to shove that left knee in there to try and get me into single egg X But I I backstep off that I really try to make sure it's very hard if you watch the match There's a lot of me using my right knee It's almost like a little bit of an anchor or a shield against him either going on the outside of the inside You'll see a lot of time. I angle it a certain way to block his entry Right now he's got a nice spider guard.
Once again, you see me kick that back leg off He's got a grip on my left foot and my right my left sleeve is my right foot my left sleeve So he's kind of got a very good position which is hard for me to to pass on you can see I'm having a lot Of trouble trying to break both of these but I'm still trying to figure that out And this is a good example of problem solving in the moment You can I can see how much I'm thinking by just watching it right now all the things that are going through my head trying To figure things out try and push his leg down here And just trying to figure out ways to solve this little riddle of a guard that Keenan has and he has a fantastic guard I'm kind of sad there's me looking around trying to figure things out and this is what happens with problem solving you analyze the situation You come up with a solution you act in a second Which you'll see me act and then you evaluate okay was that successful no I left my left hand there I need to unpick that so then I take that new information back to the start and I go again And this is basically what you see on as a feedback loop, and that's how you gather information with this So Keenan tries to switch underneath there I do a good job of sprawling back, but he's still using this Worm guard type style guard trying to grab my lapel a lot of the time So I'm just trying to unpick that now this is an interesting position where I feel usually quite comfortable where I'm defending like the berimbolo But unfortunately he grabs my underwear and pulls it down So I felt like I was in a good position But I put my back on the ground because my pants were coming off and then he goes to straightaway try and pass me This is a lesson you know in hindsight. I should have just let my my butt come out it would have been good for the the photographers and a lot of the ladies in the In the complex, but I opted to hide the booty at that time because it wasn't quite complete yet The the squats hadn't quite kicked in so now we're getting a restart. I know I'm in a quite a good position, so I'm feeling quite confident Knowing how good I feel with my guard against Keenan style passing where I'm nice and close and underneath him because he's taller So it's much better to get underneath the taller person into single leg X and X guard I know I'm already halfway under there, so I have a good feeling that I could easily sweep him The test is trying to pass him I think I was passing with the wrong strategy trying to pass long Instead of trying to get close into half guard and stuff like that very tight So here I bring him up you watch I cry and grab both feet here basically stop him from being able to step back And stretch him out and I come up here, but once again I'm getting sucked into trying to pass long This is great if you're like Keenan where you got long arms and a long body But for someone shorter like me compared to Keenan, it's not a great strategy to pass I really should have tried to force half guard and try to pass that way like you saw me at the start where I Arguably got the closest to passing this is just making things harder on myself than what I should have been But back then I didn't have the knowledge I knew now of you know strategies for certain body types and stuff So this was a very much a learning curve for me at the time Okay, so this is just a little bit of a scramble is going back under to The baron Bolo again now Keenan believes the baron Bolo's don't work, but it was interesting seeing him try to do it Maybe that's why he doesn't believe they work anymore I think everything can work you've got the right timing, but everything can be defended as well The argument is quite void he's trying to get underneath me here We're in 50-50 I force this position because I feel like I want to slow things down a little bit and maybe Get a get a sweep to a pass from this position, so I was quite happy here Keenan starts working at trying to get my my far arm. I think it is in a second He's actually might be the close arm.
He's grabbed my close arm at the moment, but I think he was looking for an arm lock in there I'm just trying to remember exactly what happened here as we're going right now. Yes 50-50 I Think he's trying to do a toe hold. I can't really see but I'm assuming you'd have no luck from that this position Looks like a lot of stalling is going on right now, but also a lot of thing Okay, grabs my close arm here now I know he was going to try and suck me in to go for an arm lock here So I'm trying to keep my elbow tight on the ground and not let him pull it over his groin line Which he's trying to put a lot of effort in to do and he's really clever here where he lets it go and goes to My back which I didn't see coming But I'm in a pretty good position to just to lie back and put my back on the ground to force that position Here again, I'm looking at the ref to make sure that I'm not losing any points unnecessary points or advantages I Think I'm not really sure what that was. It looked like an advantage.
I can't tell you what the score is right now But it should be quite even I Come up I'm forcing it up I really like need to come up now and open these legs a little bit and look at passing So this is what you see me do open the legs and I'm trying to Create another opportunity to get close and pass This is really like I said It's a almost a waste of time for me to try and pass from such a long distance because there's so much distance to cover And it's very harder for a shorter A shorter guard pass it to be able to pass from spider guard like this I really should have forced half guard and there's just a lot of me kind of trying to figure these figure this Equation out that's in front of me, which is Kenan's guard That's the thing about competition it's not always a great dictator of who the best is it's just who makes the better judgments on the day I Think if you saw the top guys go against each other ten times in a row for an hour each you would see a very different Outcome at the end because this there's so much strategy involved in trying to figure people's games out and trying to beat him But it's very easy to get caught in you know There's some guard players or some jiu-jitsu players that just have their one little secret They catch everyone on doesn't necessarily mean that that good they just caught everyone on that day And then people catch up and figure things out So once again here I'm trying to look at for like a leg drag position, which is basically throwing both of his legs to one side But he's doing very good job of blocking my arm with his legs, so it's making it very hard to throw his legs to one side This is when I trained a lot more of gi than what I do now And this is half the reason why I don't like doing the gi as much as it's just too easy to Stall out and just hold on to grips and stuff like that I prefer no gi because it's a lot more mechanically based rather than just here, I'm trying to force something on right now and Just making sure he doesn't get his grips The referee tells me to engage and for some reason gives me a negative point here Which is ultimately the reason why I lost this was by a negative point with Even on the scoreboard. I don't know where this ref is from I've never ever seen someone get a negative point for what I'm trying to do now, which is attacking, but you know it happens A lot of referees will not want to make the decision so they will they will try and manufacture any kind of advantage to to steer them away from having to make a decision on a match Which I obviously I don't blame before I've been a ref before I don't like making decisions as well, but I also don't want to You know create Bullshit decisions just so you can get away from that And we finish the match here, so in this match I lost by an advantage, but I think there's a lot of There's a lot of lessons here especially for someone that's shorter like don't try and pass the guard like this spider guard Try and get close force half guard and stuff like that and make sure that when you are playing guard you get underneath them If I was to try and play the same guard Keenan was against him He would pass me quite easily And I'm just trying to figure out what the hell happened here. Okay, cool. He got it whatever but it was like I said a fun lesson You
