Okay guys I'm here today with Sebastian Brunch, huge honor for me. Guys if you guys don't know him, he's the Yoga for BJJ guy. And Sebastian has a very very interesting story. So he was the very first person on Europe to win the double gold in the Worlds in the IBJJF.
He won as a purple belt, adult. And then what happened Sebastian, like one year later you barely could train Jiu Jitsu, right? Yeah, just a few months after that, I worked so hard for that. And when my career was supposed to really take off and I was going to win double gold at Brown and everything, I couldn't work, I couldn't train, I couldn't sleep.
Because your body was all broken? Yeah, herniated discs, pain in the elbows, shoulders, the sort that most people can recognize. Yeah, and you were mirror weight and you won the double gold, meaning like you had to fight in the open class. I had a good weekend.
But the opponent was the easy part. I can say that again, the opponent was the easy part. Even though my opponents were great, it was easy to beat them. But I was beating myself every day by the way that I approached Jiu Jitsu.
The more Jiu Jitsu, the better. I just need to get more time on the mat. But it wasn't sustainable. And that was back in 2010.
So after that, you start diving yourself on yoga. And I think true, your wife, right? I met a very beautiful girl and luckily she was also very intelligent. So she saw that because she was into Jiu Jitsu too.
She even won the white belt worlds. And she like, we realized that yoga and BJJ is a perfect combination. I saw the way she moved and she didn't know Jiu Jitsu and she was just taking to it like a duck to water. It was like, wow, when you have the yoga movement, you can just apply the Jiu Jitsu immediately.
She needed like five reps to know the technique. I needed a hundred. Because I'm like, okay, there must be something to this. So I took some time off Jiu Jitsu.
I did only yoga for like a year. And when I came back, I was in better shape than ever. Now I'm 38 and I can honestly say that I'm in much better shape now for Jiu Jitsu than when I was 18. No, and I believe and I can see just like by your body, your posture and etc.
Yeah, so one thing that's very, very interesting to me, Sebastian, is how like you had never done yoga before. And then from 2010 to 2022, okay, it's 12 years, but then you became like the best yoga person for Jiu Jitsu. And so it's definitely something that everybody can do, right? It is when you do what we do, our type of yoga, we took away a lot of the things that people are scared because there's a lot of stigma.
When I tell a big strong guy, hey, you should do yoga, they don't like, oh, yeah, they say yoga is for skinny girls that are flexible and it's not for me. But that's like saying like, oh, I'm so thirsty, Bernard, I can't have a glass of water. I'm too hungry to eat or too tired to sleep. It's like so counterintuitive because the people are already very flexible.
They don't need the stretching. But you and me too, when I wake up in the morning, I'm as stiff as everybody else.
